The Farm
Located in the lovely rolling hills of northeast Randolph county, the farm and its log buildings are more than 200 years old. Our family began restoring 60 acres of the original homestead in 1983. Today our working farm is rich in the diversity of pastures, ponds, meadows, gardens, woodlands, wildlife and livestock. Using sustainable agriculture, we work with nature to enrich rather than deplete our environment. We intentionally limit the size of our farm operation in order to maintain the personal quality of our products and continue to enjoy what we do everyday. In addition to our handmade farmstead cheeses, we offer monthly Dining Adventures via Dinner and Sunday Brunch at the Dairy and an organic vegetable Community Supported Agriculture program (details below). Our mission is to nurture the land, our family, and our guests through creative work and quality products.
Exciting News about our CSA project.
Our memberships are full for 2010. If you would like to receive on going information about our CSA and be contacted for a 2011 membership application please press the link below and send in the form. Thanks.
We want you to know about our newest venture:
GOAT LADY Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). This member based
farm program will begin in 2010. For the last 15 years you have purchased
our dairy products, enjoyed our meal events and learned about farm life on our
Open Farm Days. Your support is the reason for our success. Now we
want to deepen the relationship between the land, the farmers and your family.
Interested? Please read on...
Members of GOAT LADY CSA will...
1. Receive the Member's Share of organic
vegetables each week for our 25-week season.
2. Purchase pre-ordered products from six
nearby partner farms (sustainably raised meats, eggs, dairy and honey).
3. Learn how to prepare, preserve and enjoy
local, seasonal food.
4. Volunteer for important work that will
make our CSA a success for all. You might help with harvest, or
distribution sites, or the web site, or recruitment, etc., wherever your
talents and interests meet the needs of our CSA community.
5. Participate in
nurturing your family's relationship to our community, our food and
the land through workshops, festivals, newsletters, outreach activities and
annual evaluations.
6. Sign an annual contract and pay an annual
fee early in the season.
7. Join GOAT LADY CSA to accomplish our three
goals: Local Food, Farm Education, Community Outreach
GOAT LADY COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE:
Certified Organic Vegetables and more...
In
1995 when Ginnie, Steve and Lee started our farm business, nurturing the direct
relationship between urban consumers, local farmers and the land was our top
priority. We see these special relationships Steve likes to call
"Food With A Face" as one of the most potent methods to care for our
environment, preserve local farmland and guarantee a thriving and sustainable
local food economy. Put another way, we believe when you change a
person's relationship to their food, you've changed them — and the world,
forever.
Today
we cherish our relationship with our cheese customers at the farmers markets
(and 60+ stores and restaurants throughout the state), the guests we serve at
our monthly on-farm educational meal events and the many visitors who tour our
farm on Open Farm Days. (In 2009 we welcomed more than 3000 farm
visitors.) After much reflection and careful planning we are ready to
take the next step.
This
summer we hired Daniel Woodham as our CSA Farm Manager. He has
produced vegetables for a small CSA for several years, and now lives
on the 15 acres where we will grow our organic vegetables. We have attended workshops, applied for grants, started the organic certification
process, and planted summer and winter cover crops in addition to planting 1200 organic garlic! We have also enlisted
six neighbor farms eager to offer "add-ons" each week for our members
(meat, dairy, eggs & honey). Our plan is to recruit 50 households for
our inaugural 2010 season growing to 100 plus over the next several years.
The
next step is up to you.
Which choice is
best for me/my family?
If you...
-
enjoy new foods and new recipes and like many kinds of vegetables
-
enjoy cooking and have the time to prepare several meals each week from
scratch
-
want to try new vegetables and learn how to prepare and preserve local,
seasonal food
-
have the desire and the time to commit to an exciting project that will
deepen your family's connection to the land and the farmers producing your
food
Then...
-
GOAT LADY CSA is a good choice for you. (And of course you can also go to
the farmers markets for lots more good local food!)
If you...
-
are a family of selective or less than adventurous eaters, or aren't great
vegetable lovers
- don't
consider cooking one of your favorite pastimes
- lead
a life that's just too busy to frequently cook from scratch
-
don't really have much extra time right now to take on any new commitments
Then...
-
Shopping when you have time at our local farmers markets and preparing fresh
food you know you enjoy may be a better choice for you.
